Heritage diesel railcars are few and far between now, and have become a real classic locomotive. The examples used in this experience are from the 1950s and will be very much a source of enjoyment to a train fanatic or for people with an appreciation of classic engineering.
The lucky train driver for the day will be travelling the rails through the Peak District, from Wirksworth to Duffield, feeling the power and the prestige of a superb heritage railcar.
Drivers can take guests with them, so maybe if you’re lucky after giving this gift, you’ll be invited to relax in the passenger saloon, while they’re doing their driving.
Lunch will be served at the Pullman buffet within Wirksworth station, provided for both the driver and one chosen guest. Additional guests are welcome to pay to have lunch with them too.
The afternoon will be spent again out on the rails, taking the controls of a main line heritage diesel locomotive, driving portions of the 18-mile track, again on a return journey ending up back at Wirksworth.
A beautiful day, celebrating the history of train travel, delighting in an unmissable experience of driving trains themselves, and enjoying a day that will live long in the memory!

Great day out
Really enjoyable learning how and driving two types of diesel. The volunteers were really friendly and knowledgeable and made the day a great experience.

Great Day out
Great day out had by all.
Instructor staff ensured the (standard) group of 4 "drivers" all had equal driving experience - a stint down hill from Wirksworth & stint uphill from Duffield - with both the morning DMU & afternoon Class 47.
We had a very warm day - recommend you take a drink (water) with you.
Event was on a "non-running" day, so we were able to be little more leisurely rather than having to fit between timetabled trains.
Driver's Guests (partners) were able to ride in the DMU during the morning & all appeared to enjoy, but were not able to travel in the afternoon - Insurance prevents the loco from pulling stock & not enough room in loco cabs.
Reasonable buffet lunch provided - sandwiches sausage rolls, pork pie, crisps, cake and drink with plenty to spare.
A guided visit around the yard & shed was included - make sure you have good footwear!
Drivers badge & experience Certificate provided.

Drive a heritage train
A really brilliant day made so memorable by Pete and Lewis who were our instructors. They were patient and humorous and the experience passed so quickly.

Experience
Overall was a good day but good even be better if it was a guided tour around the premises. We was shown around the trains workshop but Unfortunately no info ref the trains was given. When questions were ask the young man had no answers. It was a silence walk around the workshop. Good venue with loads of opportunities to make it a perfect day, just a shame it was not used.
